Learn Basic Rhythm (Part One)

Rhythm markings indicate how the notes or chords line-up with the underlying pulse. This pulse is also known as “the beat”, and is the continuous ‘heartbeat’ that underlies virtually all music, only varying in speed, also known as tempo.

The following four rhythms are basic rhythms where you are simply holding a note or chord for one, two, three, or four whole beats:
