Introducing Alternate Picking

When playing fast, even moderately fast, picking with all down-strokes becomes tiresome. To use your right hand most efficiently, you will want to alternate between down and up motions from note-to-note. This can apply to single notes as well as chords.

This old surf rock song example introduces a new technique called tremolo, where you quickly alternate your pick on a single note, playing several rapid notes in sequence. Every single note in this song, except the final note, is played with tremolo.

Use this exercise to start getting more comfortable picking notes with this new alternating down/up motion. Start slow and gradually speed up your tempo.
