Learn Basic Rhythm (Part Two)

Now that we have discussed whole-beat rhythms, we will look at rhythms that use partial beats, such as one half beat, one quarter beat, or one and a half beats. The chart below introduces three of these partial-beat rhythms:

Try the following list of rhythm exercises by either clapping the rhythms or playing chords. The notes that appear connected are eighth notes, each of which is worth one half beat.

The next set of rhythm exercises feature the dotted quarter note, worth one and a half beats. Note how one dotted quarter note and one eighth note add up to two whole beats. Subdividing the measure in your head like this can make it easier to read and understand the rhythms on the page.
